The Maryland legislature recently passed, and the Governor signed into law, Senate Bill 590.
This important bill which makes speeding 30 miles an hour over the posted limit a misdemeanor punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a fine.
For the first time in Maryland, starting on October 1, 2025, a person can be arrested and jailed for speeding.
This bill also makes reckless driving punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a fine. Reckless driving is defined as operating a vehicle “in wanton or willful disregard for the safety of persons or property” = a broad standard which gives the police the authority to issue a citation or even arrest based on a subjective standard.
